Artwork by Nicolas Canu | France

“In-between” sums up the starting point and drive behind the work of Nicolas Canu. He grew up in the suburbs of Paris: not quite the city and not quite the countryside. He was often on the road: to visit his father who was working in different European countries. This transient aspect was confirmed later through Canu’s professional skateboarding activities. He recalls the car journeys to hunt down the most photogenic & ideal skateboarding spot, absorbing the passing landscapes from the freeways, shopping malls, suburbia, etc.

His paintings are an exploration of these relatively anonymous spaces: not quite the city and not quite the countryside. Of how an individual occupies such space and the balance between the urban and natural components of a landscape.

Painting is a way of creating one’s own personal territory. The subject matter of Canu’s work effortlessly facilitates this. His paintings depict decompression zones free from the scrutiny of others. Indeed, Canu’s pictorial spaces are devoid of others and offer up a ‘blank canvas’  if you will, for the onlooker to make their own and quietly invest with their thoughts.
